What is coaching?

The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.”

In other words, throughout a series of sessions (an engagement), the client and coach work together to define and pursue the client’s goals and objectives.

Is coaching different than consulting or counseling/therapy?


Consulting is recognized as the giving or sharing of expert advice. Clients hire a consultant to tell them what to do about a problem or how to complete a task.

Counseling/Therapy is done by a licensed counselor or therapist and is generally used to help clients work through unresolved or difficult things from their past that are impacting their lives today.

Coaching, meanwhile, meets clients where they are currently and helps them envision and build towards the things they want in their future. It is designed to move them from where they are to where they want to be. Coaching is not the process of giving advice, but rather empowering clients to use their knowledge and resources to find their own answers.
